Pre-book with a local guide — the history lands very differently coming from someone who grew up in the community. 9:00 AM Christuskirche & Parliament Gardens Start at the Christuskirche, Windhoek's most photographed landmark, then walk the gardens in front of the Tintenpalast — the "Ink Palace," built in 1913 as the German colonial administration building and now home to Namibia's Parliament. CITY CENTRE LANDMARK 10:00 AM Alte Feste & Independence Memorial Museum Alte Feste, Windhoek's oldest building, sits beside the Independence Memorial Museum, which carries the story from colonial occupation through the liberation struggle to 1990 — good grounding before the day moves north. CITY CENTRE HERITAGE LANDMARK 11:00 AM Windhoek Railway Station Built in 1902 under German colonial rule, the railway line from Swakopmund was what turned Windhoek from a small garrison outpost into a real city — the literal starting point of its growth. CITY GROWTH LANDMARK 11:45 AM Old Location Cemetery, Hochland Park The only physical memorial to the Old Location — the Black neighbourhood razed after residents refused forced removal to the newly built Katutura. On 10 December 1959, police opened fire on unarmed protesters, killing 11 and wounding 44. The date is now Namibia's Human Rights Day. Some former residents feel the site's significance is still under-acknowledged relative to what happened here — worth sitting with rather than rushing past. TRANSIT 1:30 PM Eveline Street Katutura's main social artery, known as "the street that never sleeps." Built as the township's commercial spine after the 1961 relocation, it's still the clearest place to feel how Katutura organized its own life on the margins it was assigned. KATUTURA HERITAGE URBAN STRUCTURE 2:30 PM Oshetu Community Market Formerly "Single Quarters," originally built to house migrant contract workers under apartheid-era ethnic zoning. Today it's Katutura's kapana capital — grilled beef street food, sold the way it's been sold for decades. Go hungry, bring small cash.
